What Is Network Attached Storage And How Does It Works?

Network Attached Storage – Configuring SMB Share

Install File Share role under File and Storage Services

Open Server Manager Dashboard select File and Storage Service

Select Volume option.

Select the Task button under the Shares option and select New Share.

In the wizard select SMB Share – Quick profile option for creating Quick profile.

Select Type a custom path option and browse

Create a new folder or select the existing folder for SMB Share

Specify the Share Name and Description. It indicates how shared folders can be accessed through the network.

Select Access-Based enumeration for viewing the permission-based shares and Allow caching for offline.

Go to Customize permissions to set User Level permission.

Select the Share tab and remove Everyone for removing default access permission.

Select Add to add users and groups for Customized user selection.

Select Principal option for selecting User Principal Name

Specify the Username and Permission

Here we selected User Group and administrator account with Access permission.

Select Create to confirm the SMB share setting

SMB Share will appear on Dashboard

From any client computer on the network, you can access SMB by entering the UNC path

Network Attached Storage – Configure NFS Share

Select Add Roles and Features from Dashboard

On Select server roles. Go to File and Storage Services. File and iSCSI services. Select Server for NFS. Add dependent features. And press next

Select Restart the server If Required, confirm and install.

Role installation will be complete. Go to the Tasks option in Shares and create a new share.

Select NFS Share –  Quick for the fastest way of creating NFS Share

Select the folder for Sharing through the browse option.

Specify the share name to view from Network

Select Kerberos authentication for NFS Share

Select Add button. And all machines with reading/write permission.

Select Next in Permission to control access. We can customize permissions by selecting particular Users and Groups

Click on Create for completing the wizard

Once it is completed, we can see the Share folder inside the Shares pane.
